Dog Abuse in Grand Rapids

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Nov. 19, 2007
Contact: Erik Bauer, General Manager – Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary

"Smokey" a dog picked up by Kent County Animal Control after being starved nearly to death has been transported to Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary for further treatment and rehabilitation. Mackenzie’s will be helping Smokey on his long road to recovery after a Grand Rapids man left him tied up with no food or water for several weeks. Charges of animal abuse are being filed immediately. Smokey lived on rainwater and what rodents he could catch for approximately six weeks. According to Kent County Animal Control the owner simply forgot to feed the dog.

Smokey is a 2-3 year old Pit Bull mix or Boxer mix (he is far to emaciated to determine breed accurately). He will be a Mackenzie’s resident until his health improves and then, depending on his disposition, be available for adoption.

Mackenzie's Animal Sanctuary, the Midwest's largest sheltered no-kill sanctuary, was founded in 1999 with a goal of saving dogs in need and placing them in loving homes. Currently home to more than 80 dogs, its mission is to find loving homes for abused, abandoned and neglected dogs; to spay/neuter its rescue dogs of age to stop the cycle of unwanted litters; to assist in public education for the betterment of our local animal community; to keep a high standard of excellence and professionalism; and to maintain the highest standards of care for the animals, including veterinary care, housing, love, tenderness and compassion.

Update on Smokey's Recovery!

Here are some pictures of Smokey as of March 6, 2008.

As you can see from the picture above, Smokey came to Mackenzie’s weighing a mere 35 lbs. and looked as though the wind could carry him away. With help from supporters, the staff and Doctors at The Animal Clinic, in addition to the efforts of Mackenzie’s staff and volunteers, Smokey is now on his feet looking and feeling better than we could have ever hoped. He’s at a very healthy weight of 50 lbs. and medically he is doing extremely well, with a very promising future ahead. Smokey has a very loving personality, enjoys playing with his toys, learning new tricks, going for walks, and loves to show affection to his human friends. Again, THANK YOU to everyone for helping continue our efforts of saving deserving dogs like Smokey!

If you would like to help with Smokey's recovery you may want to consider volunteering your time or making a donation. Please use the links on the left for either option. Thank you!
