Meet Chewy
Chewy, you know, like Chewbacca, that hairy guy from Star Wars. That was the first thing we could think of when we first saw the poor little Shih Tzu that was found wandering the streets in the freezing temperatures. No collar, no tags and no microchip… just a bad, bad, bad, case of fleas and matt’s.
When Kent County Animal Control first brought Chewy in, they immediately had to clean him up. Four baths and a hair cut later, followed by a major dose of front line, they were finally able to remove the flea dirt and severely matted fur. Chewy was covered in flea dirt so badly that his beautiful cream fur was almost black. While being bathed his skin would bleed because the flea bites, flea dirt and matt’s were so severe. He was malnourished and dehydrated. Chewy also had a hard time walking; his nails had grown so long they began to curl under his paws. It is obvious that he must have been locked up for some time.
On January 27, 2010, Chewy tested positive for heart worm, a life threatening disease for dogs. Having limited resources and funds for dogs with medical needs such as this, Kent County immediately transferred Chewy to Mackenzie’s. Treatment and recovery for heart worm can take anywhere from 4-6 weeks. Please keep Chewy in your thoughts and prayers!
